It is estimated that in South Africa a rhinoceros dies approximately every seven hours at the hands of hunters who seek to extirpate the horns to sell them on the black market.

In the mosaic there are also numerous other animals such as rhinoceros, an Indian elephant (recognized from the ears) with his Indian conductor, and the Indian peafowl, and other exotic birds.
